Blog Prompt #12 – Writing Canon Species
Blog Prompt #12 – Writing Canon Species One of the most recognizable aspects of Star Trek is the proliferation of canon alien species. In the United States, Canada, Australia, England, Germany and France in particular, and probably in a lot of other parts of the world, you’d be hard-pressed to find an adult who had never, ever heard of a Vulcan. Most people can probably even provide tidbits like the “live long and prosper” wish, or even perform the salute. Star Trek, in particular the Original Series, is recognizable around the world, and one of the reasons is the indelible canon alien species. Klingons are almost as well-known, although their devotion to honor is more of a TNG bit of canon and, as such, isn’t quite as well-known globally....

Blog Prompt #10 – Character Sexuality/Relationship Mixes
Blog Prompt #10 – Character Sexuality/Relationship Mixes We see it all the time. Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. Etc. etc. etc. Lather, rinse, repeat. But that’s not what always happens in real life. Sometimes, boy meets boy. Or girl meets girl. Or someone wants to change genders. Or someone is attracted to more than one gender. Plus, in canon, there are relationships that cross species lines, and there are marriages that are between more than two individuals. IDIC According to a 2011 Williams Institute study, about 3.5% of the United States identifies as gay, lesbian or bisexual. If the percentage holds true, then the NX-01, which had 83 crew members, would have had three gay, lesbian or bisexual persons on board. The Enterprise-E, a Sovereign class, which...
Blog Prompt #9 – AUs, Original Characters and Settings
Blog Prompt #9 – AUs, Original Characters and Settings The Trek universe is wide-ranging and varied, and there are hundreds if not thousands of canon characters, races, planets, ships and scenarios. What happens when authors take it to another level? Original characters can be fine examples, with multiple dimensions, believable personality traits and compelling back stories. Or they can be reincarnations of Mary Sue. Original settings can be truly unique and interesting. Or, they can be thinly veiled canon with a fresh coat of paint. To those ends, what do you think of using original characters and settings in fan fiction? What’s the best setting for an original character? Is it as a lone figure, thrust into a canon ship or situation? In a group of original...

Blog Prompt #7 – Music and Writing
Blog Prompt #7 – Music and Writing This topic has come up before, but now is your chance to really talk about it, and add some depth to your ideas! Music, for many of us, is a part of the writing process. It might inspire us. We might need it to get started, or motivated, or to finish. We might give characters their own theme songs or might follow along with the lyrics as they pull us into a different direction. We might even write songfics. Your blogging mission is therefore to answer questions like this – Does music inspire you in your writing? Do any characters have a song that just clicks for you? Do any character relationships have songs (e. g. they’re playing our song)? Do lyrics inspire you? Do rhythm, beats and instruments inspire? Is one genre...
