Blog Prompt #9 – AUs, Original Characters and Settings

Blog Prompt #9 – AUs, Original Characters and Settings The Trek universe is wide-ranging and varied, and there are hundreds if not thousands of canon characters, races, planets, ships and scenarios. What happens when authors take it to another level? Original characters can be fine examples, with multiple dimensions, believable personality traits and compelling back stories. Or they can be reincarnations of Mary Sue. Original settings can be truly unique and interesting. Or, they can be thinly veiled canon with a fresh coat of paint. To those ends, what do you think of using original characters and settings in fan fiction? What’s the best setting for an original character? Is it as a lone figure, thrust into a canon ship or situation? In a group of original...

Boldly Reading Book Club #2 – Agamemnon

Boldly Reading Book Club #2 – Agamemnon Our next Boldly Reading Book Club selection is mdgarcia’s Agamemnon. The story is rated M. Introducing Agamemnon A new executive officer arrives on the Agamemnon, as Richard James thinks he’s gotten himself on the fast track to a sweet promotion. But all is not sunshiny, as he’s met with less than perfectly opened arms. And then discipline is a little … lax. There’s a nice word for it. For James, it’s a culture shock as he sees the captain’s yeoman hanging around the captain perhaps a little too much, the chief engineer is less than cordial to him and no one seems to have done any paperwork in a dog’s age. The Characters The cast is small, and easy to follow. There’s the...

Book Club Choice #1 Author Q&A

Book Club Choice #1 Author Q & A Q&A with jespah Technically, this is more QQQ’s and whatever A’s I can get from jespah. But I imagined myself sitting down in front of a crackling fire in a book lined library with my dear associate jespah and conversing with her about her writing. Here then, is some of those ponderings. Beginning with Paving Stones, why the Mirror Universe? Why Doug? Simple enough questions, but given the wealth and range of your own expanded universe, why did you seek to explore the Mirror Universe too? In relation to that, why the focus here and elsewhere on a character who was only a recurring character for a season on Prime ENT? I adore Steven Culp and I think he had the potential to be more. Culp himself says he was originally hired...

Blog Prompt #7 – Music and Writing

Blog Prompt #7 – Music and Writing This topic has come up before, but now is your chance to really talk about it, and add some depth to your ideas! Music, for many of us, is a part of the writing process. It might inspire us. We might need it to get started, or motivated, or to finish. We might give characters their own theme songs or might follow along with the lyrics as they pull us into a different direction. We might even write songfics. Your blogging mission is therefore to answer questions like this – Does music inspire you in your writing? Do any characters have a song that just clicks for you? Do any character relationships have songs (e. g. they’re playing our song)? Do lyrics inspire you? Do rhythm, beats and instruments inspire? Is one genre...

Blog Prompt #6 – Writing Complex Evil Characters

Blog Prompt #6 – Writing Complex Evil Characters We are going to shift to fortnightly blog prompts (about twice per month or so), in order to provide lots of time to cogitate and create. This post, if you wish, may or may not dovetail with this month’s book club selection, Paving Stones Made From Good Intentions. Or strike out on your own with your answers, if you prefer. With the recent death of the talented Michael Ansara, the Trek universe loses the man who brought to life a character that was, perhaps, the first three-dimensional Klingon, Kang. In Day of the Dove, Kang isn’t just out to fight the bad old humans. Instead, he listens to reason. And so our newest prompt asks – how do you write evil characters who are not mere caricatures? Do you find...

Blog Prompt #5 – Self-Promotion

Blog Prompt #5 – Self-Promotion Sell yourself. Sell your story. The prompts to date have been of a more reflective nature. Asking you to pose questions of yourselves. Not an easy thing to do. However, I think this next prompt is a little harder to do. I want you to sell yourself. Sell your story. Sell your character. This is a little opportunity to give yourself a little love. This is a chance to advertise a story of yours you have a soft great big proud spot for. To talk our arms off about a character or characters of yours that you positively gush over. Perhaps maybe you’ve a story that’s been missed over or a character not quite got by the readership. Well, here’s your opportunity to tell us about them in your words. Don’t worry about...
